February 15, 2017 — The Charlotte Touchdown Club in conjunction with the Football Writers Association of America and Florida East Coast Railway proudly announces University of Notre Dame great Ross Browner as the recipient of the 2017 Bronko Nagurski Legends Award, which recognizes outstanding defensive football players from the past 40 years.

The award will be presented formally during the annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Awards Banquet presented by ACN on December 4, 2017.

Browner joins a growing list of prestigious Bronko Nagurski Legends Award recipients including: Alan Page, Bubba Smith, Ted Hendricks, Roger Wehrli, Mike McCoy, Jack Youngblood, Larry Jacobson, Randy Rhino, Randy White, Randy Gradishar and Chet Moeller.

Ross Browner was one of the most decorated defensive players in the history of college football. At the University of Notre Dame, Browner was a four-year starter and was a unanimous All-America his junior and senior seasons of 1976 and 1977.

In 1976 Browner won the Outland Trophy and the United Press International award as the nation’s top defensive lineman. In 1977, Browner was award the Lombardi Trophy and the Maxwell Award as well as UPI Lineman of the Year, the only player ever to win it twice. Notre Dame had a 39-7 record in his time that covered 11-0 in 1973, 8-3 in 1975, 9-3 in 1976, and 11-1 in 1977. Notre Dame won National Championships in 1973 and 1977.

Ross Browner’s career statistics include 340 tackles, a school record, 10 deflected passes and two blocked kicks. He also scored a touchdown and two safeties. Browner was inducted into College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

Browner was the first-round draft pick in the 1978 NFL Draft for the Cincinnati Bengals. Voted the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1978, he played nine seasons for the Bengals. He set the Super Bowl record for tackles by a defensive lineman in Super Bowl XVI.
